A salary loan, payday loan or BNPL label describes how credit is sold. Find the legal lender, repayment schedule and terms. An employer salary advance and a bank/NBFC loan are not automatically the same product.
Small EMIs add up
List mobile EMIs, checkout pay-later instalments, app loans, card payments, gold loans and family commitments together. Avoid adding a phone EMI twice when it is already part of your card bill.
A practical order of work
- Record every due date and actual take-home income. Keep essentials and a chosen reserve visible.
- Identify overdue payments and cash gaps before selecting an extra-payment strategy.
- Ask lenders for written options: billing alignment, a revised schedule, or a closure quote. Approval and terms vary.
- Compare total costs, not just a smaller EMI. A longer loan may cost more.
- Keep receipts, closure documents and a complaint trail. Check bureau records for errors.

What current research says
TransUnion CIBIL’s June 2026 release reports a March 2026 CMI of 104 versus 97 a year earlier, with improving card delinquency performance. That does not mean every household is comfortable. Its July 2026 FinTech summary says around a quarter of retail originations by volume come from fintechs and about 94% of growth is from existing-to-credit borrowers.
